Swing Signs

Swing signs offer a practical answer to one of the most common problems with outdoor pavement signage: toppling in windy weather. Rigid A-boards catch gusts directly and can tip over. A swing pavement sign instead uses a suspended panel that moves with the wind rather than resisting it, so far less force reaches the base below. Signware Systems, a UK retail display and signage manufacturer based in Leicester and trading since 2006, produces a range of these signs built around that principle. Each unit pairs a steel swing frame with a water-fillable polyethylene base, creating a stable, attention-grabbing display suited to shop fronts, high streets, and forecourt locations across the country.

Why UK Businesses Trust Signware Systems

Signware Systems has built its reputation over two decades, specialising in retail display, shelving, and shopfitting solutions for businesses across the UK. The company works with manufacturing partners across the UK, Europe, and Asia, supplying outdoor swing signs, pavement signs, snap frames, and other outdoor advertising displays alongside its wider retail display range. What Makes a Swing Sign Different From a Standard A-Board?

A standard A-board is a rigid, hinged structure, so the whole panel acts like a sail and transfers wind force straight into its base. A swing sign works differently: its panel hangs freely from a steel frame and pivots with each gust, while a water-fillable base adds ballast to keep the centre of gravity low.

Two flat panels joined in a hinged or inverted V shape mean an A-board’s entire surface catches the wind directly. A swing sign’s suspended panel moves with the gust instead of resisting it, so less force reaches the base. This design is intended to help the sign stay upright in conditions that might otherwise tip a standard board. If you are comparing options, you can also explore our A-board range to see which type suits your setting.

Our Swing Sign Range

Signware Systems offers swing pavement signs in a modular, configurable format. Rather than separate product families, you choose from four size codes, two print options, and two frame colours to build a sign that matches your premises and location.

Choosing Your Size

The range includes four size codes: 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000. Only the 3000 and 4000 sizes include a built-in wheel base, making repositioning straightforward even once the base is filled. For narrower pavements where pedestrian access matters, the 1000 or 2000 sizes keep your sign visible without creating an obstruction. Exact panel and poster pocket dimensions for each size are available on request from our product team, so you can confirm the right fit before ordering.

Panel or Poster Pocket Printing

Every swing sign is available in two graphic styles. The aluminium panel has your artwork printed directly onto it for a durable, long-term finish, and a new panel is ordered whenever you want to update the design. The poster pocket is an acrylic holder that lets you slide printed posters in and out, which suits seasonal offers, daily menus, or messaging that changes often. Choose the panel for established branding, or the poster pocket for regular updates.

Frame Colour Options

Frames are available in black or white, so you can match the sign to your shop front or brand identity. You can browse our swinging sign range to see the full range of configurations.

How the Swing Sign Mechanism Works

A swing sign’s stability comes from two features working together: a steel frame that lets the display panel pivot with the wind, and a water-fillable polyethylene base that keeps its centre of gravity low. The two larger sizes also include built-in wheels for easier repositioning.

Steel Frame Swing Motion

The display panel hangs from the steel frame and swings when wind hits it, rather than resisting the gust head-on. This pivoting action is intended to reduce the force acting on the base. The movement also has a marketing benefit: a swinging panel tends to catch the eye of passing trade more readily than a static board, helping draw attention towards your entrance.

Water-Fillable Polyethylene Base

The base is made from polyethylene and designed to be filled with water, adding weight low down for stability. When empty, it is light enough to carry or roll into position before filling, which makes the sign easy to move indoors overnight if needed.

Wheels on Larger Sizes

The 3000 and 4000 sizes include built-in wheels in the base, so you can reposition the sign even once it has been filled. This is useful for premises where the sign needs to move during the day, or be brought inside at closing time.

Reliable Performance Outdoors

The water-filled base is what keeps a swing pavement sign upright in changeable UK weather. Combined with its pivoting panel, the design is intended to help the sign stay stable in conditions that could topple a rigid A-board, though no outdoor sign is entirely maintenance-free.

Practical care extends the life of any outdoor sign. It is sensible to bring your sign indoors overnight or during severe storms, and poster pocket covers should be checked periodically for scratching or fogging. The steel frame is built for outdoor use, but checking pivot points and brackets for wear after extended use is good practice. Outdoor swing signs can be customised with your own branding, either through a printed graphic panel or posters inserted into the poster pocket.

What Our Customers Say

Ana Farrell left a 5-star review for the poster pocket version in white: “More than satisfied […] great product.”

Where to Use Your Outdoor Swing Sign

Outdoor swing signs suit cafes, bars, restaurants, retail shops, and beauty salons. They can be placed on pavements, roadsides, or in car parks to promote offers, menus, or sales to passing pedestrians. Their portable design means they can be repositioned easily, which makes them useful for directing foot traffic towards an entrance or for temporary use at events.

Smaller sizes are also used indoors at exhibitions or within shopping centres to highlight specific promotions. If you are placing freestanding signage on a public pavement or highway, check with your local council, as a pavement licence may be required in some areas. For busier locations where repositioning matters, the 3000 or 4000 sizes with built-in wheels are practical, while the compact 1000 and 2000 sizes suit narrower pavements where pedestrian access is a priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes are swing signs available in?

Signware Systems offers four size codes: 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000. The two larger sizes, 3000 and 4000, include a built-in wheel base for easier repositioning. Exact dimensions for each size can be confirmed with our product team before you order.

What is the difference between the panel and poster pocket versions?

The aluminium panel has your artwork printed directly onto it for a permanent finish, best suited to long-term branding. The poster pocket is an acrylic holder that lets you slide posters in and out, which suits messaging that changes regularly, such as seasonal offers or daily specials.

How does the water-fillable base keep the sign stable?

You fill the polyethylene base with water once the sign is in position. This adds weight low down, creating a stable anchor point. Combined with the panel’s pivoting motion, which lets wind pass around the sign rather than push against it, the filled base is designed to help keep the sign upright outdoors.

Is a pavement licence needed to display a swing sign outside my business?

This depends on your local council and where the sign is placed. If you are positioning a freestanding swing pavement sign on a public pavement or highway, it is worth checking with your local authority to confirm whether a licence applies in your area before you install it.

What colour options are available for swing signs?

Frames are available in black or white, so you can match your swing signs to your shop front or existing branding. Both options work well whether you want your sign to blend in with your premises or stand out against the building facade.
